2018 Annual General Meeting!

Burnaby Velodrome’s Dog Policy

In the past there has not been an official policy on dogs. However, in light of two recent events, the Board of Directors have decided to put together a simple policy and set of guidelines.

The two events in question were:
-A dog pooping just outside of the office
-A dog on the track during warm up during March’s edition of Bare Bones while people were on the track

The guidelines are pretty simple:
-Dogs must be leashed. Said leash must be attached to something solid.
-Dogs should only relieve themselves outside. Not inside. Owners should cleanup after their dog’s bowel movement.
-Dogs shouldn’t be overly barking.
-Dogs shouldn’t bite people.

Service and guide dogs are always welcome.

The Board doesn’t really want to ban dogs from the track, so please adhere to these simple, and reasonable guidelines.

Cats are currently informally banned from the track, due to this incident. This is also why there’s a sign above the start/finish line stating that no cats are allowed.

Burnaby Velodrome Club’s Annual Open House

That’s a wrap! The Burnaby Velodrome’s Open House was another success. We had nearly sixty people ride the boards during the four sessions over two days.

The sessions started with talks of safety and learning how to start and stop a fixed gear bike. We moved onto riding the bikes along the apron (concrete along the bottom of the track) and Cote where there is no minimum speed.

The next progression had riders going up onto the straight aways showing us a great deal of skill and track awareness. Once each of the riders was comfortable with the skills of shoulder checking, speeding up, slowing down, and entering/exiting the track safety we moved on. The next step is the most exciting and what everyone looks forward to the most, riding the corner. The banking at Burnaby is forty seven degrees at its steepest point and does require a minimum speed of thirty kilometers per hour. Riders started to pick up their speed, and when they were going fast enough they went up to the sprinter’s lane!

Once riders got a few laps under their belts they progressed to riding in different lanes on the track, with some riders making their way up to the rail! We want to say thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed riding the track. We also want to thank our members who came out and volunteered during the weekend.

For those who missed out on riding the track or who want to give the track a try we have a summer special on our learn to ride program. We are offering five ninety minute sessions including a bike rental, coaching, and insurance. Everything you need to try the track for $100 including taxes. Learn to ride programs happen Monday and Friday nights from May to September from 6:30pm-8pm. Sessions are drop in so no need to preregister and we always have coaches on site to run sessions 1 through 5 making learning to ride very easy. For kids under nineteen years of age we offer junior programming specifically for youth. The first three times are free to try including bikes, and coaches. Bike rentals are always free for youth under nineteen years old. We also have a program for Aboriginal youth which happens on Friday. Time Trial Night – May 9

We had five riders out for our first TT night of the summer. For most, it was their first time racing against the clock. Some riders put out multiple efforts of the same distance to try and improve their pacing. Everyone put out amazing efforts, and had fun, despite the amount of suffering. We hope to see more brave riders our for our next one, scheduled for June 13.

Flying Gorilla Academy Sprint Night

The first Friday Night Sprint Tournament presented by the Flying Gorilla Academy is in the books. 8 riders took place, each doing a flying 200, and were then placed against riders of similar times. Each rider got four rounds of sprints in. 

The next night is set for June 1. This is open to all abilities, including Novice riders. We had one novice this time. Huge congratulations to Sarah GN for not only doing her first ever flying 200, but also going 3 tenths of a second quicker on her second effort.

1000 Mile Challenge

How far can you ride? 8000 laps of the track is what it will take to ride 1000 miles. Hit 1000 miles and you will receive a very special prize. 

We will start the challenge on June 1. If you would like to to participate, you can get a timing tag from one of the staff members. This will record your laps, and you can see how many you have ridden. Good luck and happy riding!

Sample Workouts

Looking to go to Open Track but not sure what to do? Give these a try!


1. 2 laps on/ 2 laps off

Rider will be up on the track rolling on the blue line. They will do 2 laps easy on the blue line, and then drop into the sprinters lane for a 2 lap max effort. They will then return to the blue line start the same 2/2 lap effort again.

2-3 sets of 6-8 efforts. 8-10 mins off the track in between sets.


2. Team Pursuit

Rider will be up on the track rolling on the blue line. They will do 3.5 laps at hard tempo (which should feel like an 80% effort), then a 0.5 lap acceleration in the saddle as hard as they can. The rider will then try to hang onto the speed they have gained for 1 more lap. Rider will then return to their hard tempo pace and start the same 3.5 +0.5 + 1 lap again.

2-3 sets of 6-8 efforts. 8-10 mins off the track in between sets.


3. Points Race Drill

Rider will be up on the track rolling on the blue line. They will do 4 laps tempo (which should feel like a 70% effort), and then drop down to the sprinters lane for a 1 lap max sprint. They will then return to the blue line and repeat the same 4 + 1 lap effort.

2-3 sets of 6-8 efforts. 8-10 mins off the track in between sets.


4. Flying 500s

Rider will be up on the track rolling at the railing. They will build up speed over 2 laps and drop into the sprinters lane by the start/finish line. The rider should be doing the 500m effort as hard as they can. 

2-3 sets of 3 efforts. 5-8mins of easy riding in between efforts, 15 mins off the track in between sets. 


5. Reverse 2 laps on/ 2 laps off

Rider will be up on the track rolling on the blue line. They will do 2 laps easy on the blue line, and then ride up to the rail for a 2 lap max effort. They should remain seated the entire time they accelerate. They will then return to the blue line start the same 2/2 lap effort again.

2-3 sets of 6-8 efforts. 8-10 mins off the track in between sets.
