What is a Velodrome?

For a basic overview of velodromes, the equipment used, and the races held on velodromes, please read the introduction to track racing, courtesy of Cyclingnews.com

Velodrome Race Track

What are the dimensions of the track?

The track is 200M long, 6M wide, and 47 degrees in the steepest corners. Check out the Our Facility page for some pictures.

Wow, that's steep... how do you stay up on the Burnaby Velodrome?

You ride fast. Anything less than 30 km/hr and you probably will not stay upright very long. With laps taking anywhere from 12 to 20 seconds, you have to have your wits about you. We consider safety to be very important given this fact that the track is small.

Can I ride my road bike on the Velodrome?

No. Some outdoor 333M or 400M tracks are shallow and wide enough to let road bikes ride on them for beginners. The Burnaby Velodrome is a track-bike-only track. Luckily, we do have rental bikes to use and first timer Learn to Ride programs...
